What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

The 17 numbers of a VIN code are a mixture of numbers and letters that can be decoded in order to reveal vital information regarding your car or truck.

Each part of a VIN number contains a different piece of information. The first digit, as an example, indicates what type of vehicle it is, like a passenger car, pickup truck, or SUV. The tenth to seventeenth digits can also include additional information such as features or options included in the car.

The last six digits of the VIN code form a sequential serial number that is unique to the car or truck. The final digit is also the check number, and the other digits are transliterated to numbers. For example the first digit receives an eight value; the next digits increase by one until it reaches nine at seventh digit, which then becomes two. Then the whole VIN will be reverted back to its original format by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is the identical to the check digit then the VIN will be valid.
